WHAT IS GREEN BURIAL?

Green burial is a more natural burial alternative where the body is not embalmed. The body is shrouded or placed in a wicker or biodegradable casket. At Columbia Gardens, we provide a burial container that allows the shrouded remains or casket to be placed directly on the earth. This enables the remains to go back to earth as quickly as possible.

WHY CHOOSE GREEN BURIAL?

Some families see green burial as a simpler, more intimate burial option. For those concerned about minimizing harm to the environment, green burial is the most environmentally friendly burial alternative. It is also more cost-effective compared to other full body burial options.

HOW QUICKLY DOES THE BURIAL HAVE TO OCCUR?

Most green burials are completed within two to five days; however, this period can be extended if needed.

DO I NEED TO HAVE A FUNERAL HOME?

Yes. The funeral home transports the body and provides the necessary documentation. The body is not embalmed and is prepared for burial in the ground using non-toxic methods.

HOW DO I ARRANGE FOR A GREEN BURIAL AT COLUMBIA GARDENS CEMETERY?

Your family meets with one of our counselors to select a site for the green burial and schedule funeral arrangements. On the day of the burial, our staff manages all burial duties for the graveside service. After the service has concluded, the family may stay to witness the burial.

WHAT KIND OF FLOWERS ARE USED IN A GRAVESIDE SERVICE?

A ceremonial flower placing can be done before the burial or during the service. At Columbia Gardens, we gather wildflowers and branches from our meadows and roses from Our Memorial Rose Garden for the ceremony. Using natural flowers and plants in the burial helps the body return to earth.

IS A MARKER PERMITTED WITH GREEN BURIAL?

Yes. You may choose to have a flush memorial or an upright memorial. Some families select a natural marker, such as a boulder, for the gravesite. Other families prefer to not have any type of marker or headstone, and that is fine.

CAN I PREPAY FOR GREEN BURIAL PROPERTY AND SERVICES?

Families are welcome to prepay for green burial property and associated services. Prepayment ensures that the chosen burial space and services are reserved in advance, providing peace of mind for families during a difficult time. Prepaid funds are held in trust, in accordance with applicable laws, to guarantee that services will be carried out as specified, even if they are needed at a later date.
